In a healthcare landscape that is in the midst of industry transformation, disruption, and financial duress, one thing has become clear: traditional governance models and approaches require a refreshed approach to guide and advance mission-based organizations.

Health system leaders should embrace a new model—one that redefines stewardship, advances strategy, and anticipates the demands of a rapidly evolving industry through a commitment to doing better for patients, physicians, staff, and the community. Governance in health systems, especially not-for-profit boards, must depart from a passive and protective role to a more proactive role driven by critical strategic rigor, dynamic scenario planning, and adaptive decision making.
