As managing director and service line leader, Physician Enterprise, and a member of the Strategy & Business Transformation practice at the consulting and advisory firm Kaufman Hall, a Vizient company, Matthew Bates leads the firm’s physician enterprise strategy and personally advises health systems and medical groups on transforming care delivery and physician enterprise performance.
Bates partners with health system executives, physician leaders and boards to address the economic, operational and strategic challenges facing employed and affiliated physician enterprises to strengthen financial sustainability, improve performance and enable long-term transformation. He delivers enterprise strategy, operating model redesign, performance improvement and data-driven insights that position organizations to thrive in an evolving healthcare economy, with particular focus on academic healthcare, academic medical centers and faculty practice plans.
A respected industry advisor for more than 30 years, Bates has authored and co-authored numerous publications on the healthcare economy and the evolving physician and ambulatory enterprise. He is the lead author of Kaufman Hall’s Physician Flash Report and the Vizient–Kaufman Hall Funds Flow Benchmarking Study and co-author of the book "Leading Medical Group Transformation". He is regularly sought out to speak and contribute perspectives on physician enterprise strategy, healthcare economics and the future of care delivery, and has been quoted or featured in outlets including Modern Healthcare, Becker’s Hospital Review, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.
Prior to joining Kaufman Hall, Bates was a managing director at Deloitte Consulting, where he advised large healthcare systems and disruptors on physician and ambulatory strategy and operations and incubated an AI and data strategy offering for healthcare. Previously, he served as a managing director at Huron, where he built and led the medical group transformation practice and the Healthcare Leadership Academy. He also served as senior leader of innovation at Studer Group, where he developed and led the physician enterprise and emergency department service lines. Earlier in his career, Bates held a senior executive leadership role at Accenture, overseeing the development, sales and delivery of health analytics solutions for private, nonprofit and government clients globally.
Bates holds a master of public health degree from the University of Denver and a bachelor of science in healthcare management from the Metropolitan State University of Denver. He also serves on the curriculum committee for the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME).
