In a recent interview with The New York Times, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella described a three-phase process of “respond, recover, and reimagine” brought about by the COVID-19 crisis. Members of Kaufman Hall’s Higher Education practice group have applied Nadella’s construct to the challenges and opportunities that colleges and universities face today.

Higher education institutions responded to the crisis with remarkable speed and flexibility and have begun work on recovery as they plan for the coming academic year. But now is also the time to begin reimagining what higher education will look like beyond the recovery phase.

To begin this process, college and university leaders should assess impacts of the COVID-19 crisis and current capabilities across all areas of the institution. The eBook outlines critical questions to ask in the areas of:

  • Academic product mix and modality
  • Enrollment and revenues
  • Student support
  • Operations
  • External partnerships

An assessment of impact and capabilities will start to determine an institution’s future strategic direction. Many institutions will have a range of strategic options for growth, transformation, or affiliation.

While the current situation is challenging, many opportunities for higher education lie ahead. Through the process of recovery and reimagination, higher education leaders can define the strategies and implement the changes that will best serve their institution and its constituencies for the future.
