On October 15, 2020, our annual Healthcare Leadership Conference shifted from its previous home at the Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago to a virtual gathering due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 2,200 registrants joined Kaufman Hall and a host of healthcare experts for four compelling conversations on the current and future impact of the pandemic and other key industry trends, and emerging strategies for reducing racial disparities in healthcare.

Three of the four sessions are available for on-demand viewing below.

CEO Panel: Race and Healthcare

  • Eugene A. Woods, President and CEO, Atrium Health
  • Wright Lassiter, President and CEO, Henry Ford Health System
  • Moderator: Kendra Smith, Moody’s Investor Services

For many years, racial inequity has been an unacceptable reality in the U.S. healthcare system. The COVID-19 pandemic has put a very bright spotlight on this problem, as we have seen people of color disproportionately hospitalized and dying from the virus. In this session, two leading health system CEOs will share their views about the nature of our current system's inequities, the root causes of these problems, and meaningful actions we can all take to eliminate this unjust and corrosive condition.

CEO Panel: Post-COVID Health System Strategy

  • Catherine A. Jacobson, President and CEO, Froedtert Health
  • Kenneth A. Samet, President CEO, MedStar Health
  • Moderator: Ken Kaufman, Chair, Kaufman Hall

Two prominent CEOs describe how their organizations reacted to the financial shocks of COVID-19; how they envision a post-COVID-19 environment; and how their organizations are shaping that environment to achieve the longstanding goals of enhanced community health, operational efficiency, care coordination, and consumer experience.

What the Coronavirus Crisis Reveals About American Medicine

  • Siddhartha Mukherjee, M.D., DPhil
  • Moderator: Ken Kaufman, Chair, Kaufman Hall

Dr. Mukherjee offered key scientific and social insights from the first six months of the COVID-19 pandemic and explored the possible future trajectory of the pandemic and the status of potential vaccines. Mukherjee noted that combatting the pandemic successfully requires an ongoing, multi-faceted approach bringing together public health organizations, providers, governments, and other key partners. Mukherjee also noted the rise of telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic, and called on providers to improve their virtual care capabilities.

Siddhartha Mukherjee

“The successful strategies against the coronavirus thus far have been strategies that have used [multiple interventions]. There’s not one thing that stands out as a success. Countries and places that have used social distancing, quarantining, isolation, masking, and good medical care have been countries where they have generally been more able to protect themselves.”

Siddhartha Mukherjee, M.D., DPhil
