Kaufman Hall Advised Saint Luke’s Health System on Continuing Care Retirement Community Partnership

Kaufman Hall served as strategic and financial advisor to Saint Luke’s Health System with the formal affiliation

SKOKIE, Ill. – April 5, 2017 – Bishop Spencer Place (BSP), a continuing care retirement community (CCRC), transferred its membership interest to Saint Luke’s Health System (SLHS) of Kansas City in December 2016. Kaufman Hall served as strategic and financial advisor to SLHS with the formal affiliation which expands the health system’s post-acute network.

As discussed in the Kaufman Hall article “Achieving An Aligned Post-Acute Network: What’s Your Strategy?,” post-acute care (PAC) services are of significant interest as hospitals and health systems look to reduce costs, improve quality, and develop their clinical delivery networks under value-based arrangements. Partnering with and/or managing a network of PAC providers better positions hospitals and health systems for success under risk- and value-based payment models, such as shared savings, and bundled and capitated payment.

Founded as a faith based, not-for-profit organization, SLHS is a $1.6 billion health system that serves the metropolitan Kansas City area and the surrounding region. BSP, also faith based and not-for-profit, is located near SLHS’ flagship hospital in Kansas City. BSP provides both independent and assisted living, as well as skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and private-duty care.

SLHS retained Kaufman Hall to conduct an in-depth operational, strategic, and financial analysis and assessment of BSP. Kaufman Hall also provided assistance with due diligence and definitive agreement negotiations.
